Luke 19:11

Listen to this article

“11 And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.”

Context:In this passage, Jesus is nearing Jerusalem, and the people accompanying him have a particular expectation that the kingdom of God would appear immediately. Jesus responds to their expectations by sharing a parable.

Understanding the Parable:The parable that follows, known as the Parable of the Ten Minas (Luke 19:12-27), is Jesus’ way of addressing their thoughts and teaching them important principles about the kingdom of God.

Lessons from the Parable:The Parable of the Ten Minas teaches several valuable lessons. Here are a few key points:

  • Faithful Stewardship:In the parable, a nobleman entrusts his servants with minas (a form of currency) before leaving to receive a kingdom. The servants are expected to engage in business and multiply the resources given to them. This teaches us the importance of being faithful stewards of what God has entrusted to us-our time, talents, and resources. We are called to use them wisely and for God’s purposes.
  • Accountability:When the nobleman returns, he evaluates how each servant has used the resources. Those who faithfully multiplied the minas were rewarded, while the one who did nothing with his mina faced consequences. This highlights the idea of accountability before God. We will all give an account of how we have used what God has given us, and it is important to be diligent in our service to Him.
  • Kingdom Responsibility:The parable emphasizes the kingdom of God. The nobleman, representing Jesus, goes away to receive a kingdom. Similarly, Jesus ascended to heaven after His resurrection, but He will return one day to establish His kingdom fully. In the meantime, we are called to live as faithful servants, using our time and resources for the work of the kingdom, making a positive impact on others and spreading the message of salvation.

Application:As we reflect on Luke 19:11 and the parable that follows, we can draw some practical applications for our lives:

  • Diligent Service:We should be diligent in using the gifts, talents, and resources God has given us to advance His kingdom. This includes sharing the Gospel, serving others, and using our skills for His glory.
  • Long-term Perspective:Just as the nobleman went away to receive a kingdom and returned, we need to have a long-term perspective on our faith. We should remember that Jesus will return and establish His kingdom fully. This should motivate us to live faithfully and with an eternal perspective in mind.
  • Faithful Stewardship:We are called to be faithful stewards of all that God has given us. This involves managing our time, talents, and resources in a way that honours Him and benefits others.
  • Hope and Patience:Jesus’ followers in this passage expected an immediate appearance of the kingdom of God. However, Jesus reminds them of the need for patience and hope. We, too, should patiently wait for the fulfilment of God’s promises, knowing that His timing is perfect.

In conclusion, Luke 19:11 and the subsequent Parable of the Ten Minas remind us of the importance of faithful stewardship, accountability, and the responsibility we have as followers of Christ in advancing the kingdom of God. It encourages us to live with diligence, a long-term perspective, and hope for the future.
