Luke 19:47

Posted on 18 May at 14:38

“And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him.”

Context:Before we delve into Luke 19:47, let’s provide some context. In the preceding verses, Jesus enters Jerusalem triumphantly on a donkey, fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9. The people acclaim him as the coming king, spreading their garments on the road and waving palm branches (Luke 19:28-40). Jesus then weeps over Jerusalem, expressing his deep sorrow for the city and prophesying its destruction (Luke 19:41-44). He enters the temple and drives out those who were buying and selling, overturning tables of the money changers (Luke 19:45-46).

Teaching in the temple:Luke 19:47 tells us that after cleansing the temple, Jesus taught there daily. The temple was the central place of worship and religious activity for the Jewish people, and Jesus took advantage of this opportunity to teach and share God’s message. His teaching in the temple demonstrated his authority and provided spiritual guidance to those who sought to hear him.

Opposition from religious leaders:The latter part of the verse reveals the response of the chief priests, scribes, and leaders of the people. They sought to destroy Jesus. The religious leaders were threatened by Jesus’ popularity and authority, and they viewed him as a threat to their own power and influence. They were also disturbed by his actions in the temple, which disrupted the established practices and traditions. Their desire to destroy Jesus foreshadows the events that would unfold in the following days, leading to his arrest, trial, and crucifixion.

Significance and lessons:Luke 19:47 highlights the conflict between Jesus and the religious authorities of his time. It emphasizes the opposition Jesus faced, even though he was teaching truth and righteousness. The passage serves as a reminder that speaking truth can often lead to opposition and persecution, especially when it challenges established systems or threatens the status quo.

Furthermore, this verse underscores the importance of Jesus’ teachings and his commitment to sharing God’s message with the people. Despite the hostility he faced, Jesus faithfully continued to teach in the temple, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to fulfilling his mission.

Overall, Luke 19:47 invites us to reflect on our response to Jesus’ teachings and consider whether we are open to receiving and following his words, even when they challenge our preconceived notions or disrupt the established order. It also reminds us of the cost of discipleship and the potential opposition we may face when faithfully living out our faith.
