Luke 19:9

Listen to this article

“And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.”

Context:Luke 19:1-10 tells the story of Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector who was wealthy but despised by the people because tax collectors were often associated with corruption. Zacchaeus, being a short man, climbed a tree to see Jesus passing through Jericho. Jesus noticed him and invited himself to Zacchaeus’ house, which surprised and delighted Zacchaeus. While at his house, Zacchaeus repented and made the pledge to give generously and make amends.

In this verse, Jesus is speaking to Zacchaeus, a tax collector, after he repents and promises to give half of his possessions to the poor and repay fourfold to anyone he has wronged.

  • Salvation and Repentance:Jesus’ declaration, "This day is salvation come to this house," signifies the transformative power of repentance and the immediate effect it has on a person’s life. Zacchaeus’ repentance resulted in salvation being extended to him and his household. It emphasizes the importance of genuine repentance in experiencing the saving grace of Jesus.
  • Restoration and Generosity:Zacchaeus demonstrated his repentance by promising to give half of his possessions to the poor and to repay fourfold to those he had wronged. His act of generosity reflected a heart changed by encountering Jesus. This teaches us the principle of restitution and the importance of using our resources to bless others and right the wrongs we may have committed.
  • Inclusion and Sonship:Jesus mentions that Zacchaeus is a son of Abraham. This statement indicates that Zacchaeus, despite being a despised tax collector, was included in God’s covenant family. It highlights the inclusive nature of God’s salvation and reminds us that anyone who repents and believes in Jesus can become a part of God’s family and receive the blessings promised to Abraham and his descendants.
  • The Seeking Savior:This passage also emphasizes Jesus’ mission to seek and save the lost. Jesus intentionally sought out Zacchaeus, a social outcast, and brought salvation to his house. It reveals Jesus’ compassion, love, and willingness to reach out to those society often rejects. It reminds us that Jesus is actively seeking to save and transform lives, regardless of a person’s background or reputation.

In summary, Luke 19:9 presents a powerful message about the transformative power of repentance, the importance of restitution and generosity, the inclusive nature of God’s salvation, and Jesus’ mission to seek and save the lost. It encourages us to repent, demonstrate the fruit of our repentance through acts of generosity and restitution, and embrace our identity as children of God through faith in Jesus Christ.
