Luke 2:13

Listen to this article

“And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,”

Context:To better understand this verse, it’s important to consider the context. Luke 2 describes the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. Verse 8 mentions that there were shepherds in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks by night.

The Appearance of an Angel:In Luke 2:9, it says, “And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.” The shepherds were terrified when an angel suddenly appeared before them. This sets the stage for what happens next.

A Multitude of the Heavenly Host:In Luke 2:13, we see that not only was there an angel, but also a multitude of the heavenly host. The heavenly host refers to a large number of angels. They appeared in the sky, praising God. This signifies a moment of great significance and importance.

Praising God:The angels were not merely present, but they were actively engaged in praising God. Their purpose was to glorify and worship God for the marvelous event that was taking place-the birth of Jesus Christ, the Savior and Messiah. Their praise reflects the joy and celebration in heaven over the coming of the Savior into the world.

The Significance:This verse highlights the divine announcement of the birth of Jesus Christ to the shepherds. It underscores the supernatural nature of Jesus’ birth and the heavenly affirmation of this momentous event. The angels’ presence and their praise emphasize the significance of Jesus’ arrival as the long-awaited Savior and the fulfillment of God’s promises.

  • Application:Luke 2:13 teaches us several valuable lessons. Firstly, it reminds us of the importance of praising and worshiping God. Just as the angels celebrated the birth of Jesus, we are called to glorify God for His wonderful works in our lives. Secondly, it emphasizes the joy and hope that comes with the arrival of Jesus. We can find peace and assurance in knowing that God keeps His promises and provides salvation through Jesus Christ.
