Luke 20:19

Listen to this article

“And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.”

Context:In this passage, Jesus is teaching in the temple, and the religious leaders, including the chief priests and scribes, were seeking to trap Him with their questions. Jesus had just told a parable about wicked tenants who mistreated their master’s servants and eventually killed his son. The religious leaders understood that Jesus was speaking against them, and they were plotting to arrest Him but were afraid of the people who held Him in high regard.

The Parable’s Meaning:The parable Jesus told in the previous verses (Luke 20:9-18) serves as an allegory to reveal the religious leaders’ rejection of God’s messengers and their impending rejection and crucifixion of the Son of God, Jesus Himself. The parable highlights God’s patience and the leaders’ wickedness.

The Religious Leaders’ Response:The religious leaders’ immediate reaction to Jesus’ parable was to seek to lay hands on Him, indicating their desire to seize and arrest Him. They understood that Jesus’ parable was a direct condemnation of their actions and revealed their true intentions. However, they were cautious because they were afraid of the people, who respected Jesus as a prophet.

  • Jesus’ Clarity:Jesus’ teachings and parables often confronted the religious leaders’ hypocrisy and revealed God’s truth. As followers of Christ, we should strive for clarity in our communication of God’s Word, speaking the truth in love even when it challenges the status quo.
  • God’s Patience:The parable reflects God’s patience with humanity, giving people numerous opportunities to repent and turn to Him. We should recognize God’s patience in our own lives and respond by repenting of our sins and seeking a relationship with Him.
  • Fear of People:The religious leaders’ fear of the people highlights the danger of placing human opinion and approval above God’s truth. We should prioritize living in accordance with God’s Word rather than seeking the approval of others.
  • Self-Reflection:This passage prompts us to examine our own lives and consider whether we are receptive to God’s messengers and teachings. Are we open to correction and willing to align our lives with His will? Or do we resist His truth out of self-interest, like the religious leaders?

Luke 20:19 offers valuable insights into the religious leaders’ response to Jesus’ teachings and the significance of the parable He shared. It reminds us of the importance of living in accordance with God’s truth and seeking His approval rather than the praise of others.
