Luke 20:39

Listen to this article

“And certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said.”

Context: Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said. Luke 20:39 (KJV)

In this verse, we find a brief interaction between Jesus and certain scribes, who were experts in the interpretation and teaching of the Jewish law. To better understand the context, let’s explore the preceding verses as well.

Luke 20:27-39 presents a dialogue where the Sadducees, a religious sect that denied the resurrection, questioned Jesus about a hypothetical scenario regarding marriage and the afterlife. Jesus skillfully responds by explaining that the resurrected state is different from our earthly existence, and that in the resurrection, marriage is no longer applicable.

After Jesus concludes His response, some of the scribes in the crowd commend Him, saying, “Master, thou hast well said.” Their response acknowledges Jesus’ wisdom and the truthfulness of His answer.

This verse highlights a significant aspect of Jesus’ ministry: His unmatched wisdom and authority in teaching. The scribes, who were well-versed in the Scriptures, recognized Jesus’ profound insight and the validity of His teachings. They acknowledged that His response to the Sadducees’ question was both accurate and praiseworthy.

The verse also reveals the ongoing conflict and debates Jesus had with various religious groups during His earthly ministry. The scribes and other religious leaders often questioned Jesus, testing Him and seeking to challenge His authority. However, Jesus consistently displayed His wisdom, confounding His opponents and gaining admiration from those who recognized His authority and understanding.

As we reflect on Luke 20:39, it reminds us of the importance of seeking truth and recognizing wisdom wherever it is found. The scribes’ acknowledgment of Jesus’ teaching serves as a reminder that true wisdom comes from God and can be found in unexpected places. It encourages us to approach Scripture with humility, openness, and a willingness to learn from the teachings of Jesus.

Overall, Luke 20:39 invites us to appreciate the depth of Jesus’ wisdom and authority, encouraging us to seek His teachings and recognize His divine insight in our own lives.
