Luke 21:27

Listen to this article

“And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.”

This verse is part of Jesus’ discourse on the signs of the end times, commonly known as the Olivet Discourse, which can be found in Luke 21:5-38. In this specific verse, Jesus is referring to His second coming.

Here are some key points to consider when studying Luke 21:27:

  • The Son of Man: Jesus refers to Himself as the “Son of man.” This title highlights His humanity while also indicating His divine authority and role as the Messiah.
  • Coming in a cloud: The imagery of Jesus coming in a cloud is significant. Clouds are often associated with divine presence and glory in the Bible. This language recalls the Old Testament prophecies, such as Daniel 7:13-14, which describe the coming of the Son of Man with the clouds of heaven.
  • Power and great glory: Jesus’ second coming will be accompanied by power and great glory. This emphasizes the majesty and authority with which He will return. It signifies His triumphant return as the King of kings and Lord of lords.

The verse itself carries profound eschatological implications, pointing to the future fulfillment of Jesus’ promise to return. It highlights the grandeur and splendor that will surround His second coming, emphasizing His divine authority and sovereignty.

When studying any Bible verse, it’s essential to consider the broader context. In the preceding verses, Jesus describes various signs that will precede His return, including wars, natural disasters, persecution, and other tribulations. He encourages believers to stay watchful and faithful, even in the midst of challenging times.

Understanding Luke 21:27 in its complete context reminds us of the importance of living with a sense of anticipation and readiness for Christ’s return. It serves as a reminder of our ultimate hope and the fulfillment of God’s plan for redemption and restoration.

As you continue to study the Bible, it’s helpful to consult various translations, cross-reference related verses, and consider the teachings of trusted biblical scholars and theologians. May your study of God’s Word be enriching and illuminating.
