Luke 22:30

Posted on 18 May at 14:38
Listen to this article

“That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”

Context:Luke 22:30 is part of a passage where Jesus is speaking to His disciples during the Last Supper. He is addressing the upcoming events of His betrayal and crucifixion and preparing them for the challenges they will face in His absence.

Symbolism of “eating and drinking at my table”:In biblical times, sharing a meal at someone’s table was considered a sign of close fellowship and intimacy. By mentioning that the disciples would eat and drink at His table, Jesus is emphasising the deep, personal relationship they will have with Him in the future.

“In my kingdom”:Jesus is referring to the future Messianic kingdom, which will be established when He returns in glory. In this eternal kingdom, Jesus will reign as the King, and His disciples, who have remained faithful, will enjoy a special place of honour and authority.

“Sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel”:This phrase suggests that the disciples will have a role of leadership and authority in the kingdom. They will be entrusted with the responsibility of judging or ruling over the twelve tribes of Israel. This statement implies that the twelve disciples will have a prominent position in the future reign of Christ.

Spiritual application:While this verse has a specific context related to the disciples, it also carries spiritual significance for believers today. It reminds us of the intimate fellowship we can have with Jesus as His followers. It also encourages us to remain faithful in our service to Him, knowing that there will be rewards and responsibilities in His eternal kingdom.

Overall, Luke 22:30 conveys the idea of a future kingdom where believers will enjoy a close relationship with Jesus, occupying positions of honour and authority. It serves as a reminder of the eternal rewards and responsibilities that await those who remain faithful to Christ.
