“And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him.”

Certainly! Here is a Bible study on Verse: “And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him.”

– Luke 22:63 (KJV)

Context:Luke 22:63 is part of the narrative leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion. In this chapter, Jesus has just celebrated the Last Supper with His disciples and has predicted Peter’s denial. He then goes to the Mount of Olives to pray, where He is betrayed by Judas Iscariot and arrested.

Mockery:The verse describes how the men who held Jesus captive mocked and physically abused Him. This mistreatment reveals the cruelty and disdain that Jesus faced in His final hours. It underscores the fulfillment of the prophecies regarding the suffering of the Messiah (Isaiah 53:3-5).

Fulfillment of Scripture:Jesus’ mockery and mistreatment were not unexpected events but were foretold in the Old Testament. Psalm 22:7-8, written centuries before Jesus’ birth, prophesies, “All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him: let him deliver him if he delight in him.” This passage finds its fulfillment in the mocking and derision endured by Jesus on the cross.

Theological Insights:a. Jesus’ Suffering: The verse reminds us of the immense suffering Jesus willingly endured for the sake of humanity. He endured physical pain, humiliation, and scorn at the hands of sinful men. This highlights the depth of His love and the extent of His sacrifice for our salvation (Philippians 2:8).

b. Jesus’ Identification with Humanity: By enduring mockery and abuse, Jesus identifies with the sufferings of humanity. He experienced the depths of human cruelty and injustice, making Him the perfect High Priest who sympathizes with our weaknesses (Hebrews 4:15).

c. Jesus’ Humility: Despite being the Son of God, Jesus willingly endured humiliation and abuse without retaliation. His response demonstrated His humility and obedience to the Father’s will (Philippians 2:5-8).

d. Jesus’ Example: Jesus’ response to mockery and mistreatment serves as an example for believers. When faced with opposition and mistreatment, Christians are called to respond with humility, forgiveness, and love, following the example set by Christ (Matthew 5:44-45, 1 Peter 2:21-23).

Application:

  • Gratitude for Jesus’ Sacrifice:Reflect on the depth of Jesus’ love and sacrifice, expressed through His willingness to endure mockery and abuse. Express gratitude to Him for His selfless act of redemption.
  • Humility and Forgiveness:Learn from Jesus’ example and seek to cultivate a spirit of humility and forgiveness in your own life. When faced with mistreatment or ridicule, respond with love and grace, remembering that Jesus endured similar treatment for our sake.
  • Identification with the Suffering:Remember that Jesus identifies with our pain, suffering, and hardships. In times of difficulty, turn to Him in prayer, knowing that He understands and empathizes with our struggles.
  • Reflecting Christ’s Character:As followers of Jesus, strive to reflect His character in your interactions with others. Seek to extend grace, love, and forgiveness, even when faced with hostility or mockery.

Remember to read and study the surrounding verses for a more comprehensive understanding of the passage and its application.
