Luke 23:24
And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.
Luke 23:24 (KJV)
Context
Luke 23:24 is part of the narrative of Jesus’ crucifixion. In this verse, Pilate, the Roman governor, has been pressured by the Jewish religious leaders and the crowd to sentence Jesus to death. Pilate, wanting to appease the crowd, gives in to their demands and authorizes Jesus’ crucifixion.
Meaning
The Greek word translated “gave sentence” (epikrinō) means to give a judicial decision or verdict. Pilate, having examined Jesus, declared him not guilty of any crime deserving death (Luke 23:4, 14-15, 22). Yet the chief priests, rulers, and the crowd insisted with loud voices that Jesus be crucified (Luke 23:23). In this verse, Pilate yields to their demand and delivers the verdict they required. The phrase “gave sentence that it should be as they required” indicates a compromise: despite recognizing Jesus’ innocence, Pilate chose political expediency over justice.
Biblical connections
The verse immediately following (Luke 23:25) clarifies that Pilate released Barabbas, the man imprisoned for insurrection and murder, and “delivered Jesus to their will.” This action fulfilled God’s sovereign plan of redemption, as Jesus, the innocent Lamb, was handed over to die for sinners. The tension between God’s sovereignty and human responsibility is evident: although Pilate made the decision to crucify Jesus, it ultimately fulfilled God’s plan of redemption (Acts 2:23). Jesus’ crucifixion was part of God’s divine plan to bring salvation to humanity.
Application
Luke 23:24 serves as a reminder that even in the face of compromise and injustice, God’s ultimate plan and purpose will prevail. It also challenges believers to stand for truth and justice, even when faced with pressure or opposition. Pilate’s compromise warns against yielding to popular opinion when it conflicts with truth and righteousness. Believers are encouraged to remain steadfast in their commitment to truth and justice, trusting that God can use even unjust human decisions to accomplish His purposes.
Reflection
The crucifixion of Jesus was a pivotal event in human history. Jesus willingly laid down His life to atone for the sins of humanity. Despite the injustice of His trial and the compromise of Pilate, Jesus’ death on the cross was the ultimate sacrifice, demonstrating God’s love and providing a way for salvation (John 3:16; Romans 5:8). The cross, though a result of human injustice, became the means of salvation for all who believe.
