Listen to this article

“And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him.”

Context:In order to understand the significance of this verse, it’s important to consider the broader context. The verse is situated within the account of Jesus’ Passion, which describes His suffering and death. It follows Jesus’ encounter with Simon of Cyrene, who was compelled to carry His cross, and precedes His actual crucifixion.

A great company of people:Luke mentions that a large crowd followed Jesus. This crowd consisted of people who had gathered to witness the crucifixion, including both His disciples and others who were curious or sympathetic. The presence of such a multitude shows the attention drawn to Jesus during this crucial moment.

Women bewailing and lamenting Him:Among the people following Jesus, Luke specifically mentions women who were expressing grief and sorrow. Their response is characterized by mourning, wailing, and lamentation. These women were likely deeply moved by Jesus’ suffering and were expressing their heartfelt sorrow at the sight of His imminent crucifixion.

Significance:The presence of the women mourning for Jesus indicates the impact He had on people, even in His darkest hour. Their grief demonstrates the depth of love and devotion that some of His followers had for Him. It also serves as a reminder that Jesus’ crucifixion was a moment of great sorrow and tragedy, not only for Jesus Himself but also for those who recognized Him as the Messiah and had hoped for a different outcome.

  • Application:This verse can encourage us to reflect on the significance of Jesus’ sacrifice and the depth of His love for humanity.
