Luke 23:51
(The same had not consented to the counsell and deede of them) he was of Arimathea, a city of the Iewes (who also himselfe waited for the kingdome of God.) Luke 23:51 (KJV)
Luke 23:51 forms part of the narrative describing the burial of Jesus after His crucifixion. In this verse a man named Joseph of Arimathaea is introduced. He is described as someone who did not consent to the counsel and deed of those who condemned Jesus. Joseph was from Arimathaea, a city of the Jews, and he was eagerly awaiting the kingdom of God.
Joseph of Arimathaea is mentioned in all four Gospels as a rich and influential member of the Jewish council, the Sanhedrin. Despite his council membership, he did not agree with the decision to crucify Jesus. The Gospel of John records that he was a secret disciple of Jesus (John 19:38). His refusal to join the unjust actions of the council demonstrates courage, integrity, and devotion, especially at a time when openly identifying as a follower of Christ could bring persecution.
The passage highlights Joseph’s deep longing for the fulfillment of God’s promises. His hope in the coming kingdom motivated him to align himself with the Messiah. This hope should inspire believers today to eagerly await the fulfillment of God’s promises and the return of Christ, allowing that expectation to drive faithful living, service to others, and the sharing of the good news.
Joseph’s example teaches the importance of standing firm in convictions even when it is difficult. He shows that believers must not compromise principles, even if doing so means opposing popular opinion or facing opposition. While there are moments when faith may be kept private, there comes a point when believers must openly profess their allegiance to Christ, refusing to let fear or social pressure silence them.
Finally, Joseph’s small but significant action—providing a tomb for Jesus—illustrates how individual deeds, motivated by love and faith, can have a lasting impact on God’s kingdom. May we be inspired by Joseph’s example to stand firm, await the kingdom with eager hope, and live as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.
