Luke 23:9

Listen to this article

“And he questioned him in many words; but he answered him nothing.”

Context:In Luke 23, we find the account of Jesus’ trial before Pilate, the Roman governor. In this particular verse, we witness an interaction between Jesus and Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, who happened to be in Jerusalem during the Passover festival.

To gain a better understanding of the context, let’s explore the surrounding verses. Starting from Luke 23:6, we read about how Pilate, upon learning that Jesus was a Galilean, sought to shift the responsibility to Herod. Pilate hoped to avoid making a judgment on Jesus and decided to send him to Herod’s jurisdiction.

In Luke 23:8, Herod was initially excited to see Jesus because he had heard much about Him and was hoping to witness a miracle. Herod had probably heard about Jesus’ miracles and wanted to be entertained, but he had no genuine interest in understanding Jesus’ message or acknowledging His authority as the Messiah.

In Luke 23:9, we see that Herod questioned Jesus extensively. However, despite the intensity of Herod’s questioning, Jesus remained silent, refusing to respond to any of Herod’s inquiries. This silence demonstrated Jesus’ resolve and His refusal to engage in meaningless discussions with someone who did not seek the truth or approach Him with genuine faith.

This passage reveals a significant aspect of Jesus’ character and the purpose of His mission. Jesus’ silence before Herod symbolizes His submission to the will of the Father and His willingness to endure unjust suffering without defending Himself. This fulfilled the prophecies concerning the Messiah as the suffering servant, as foretold in Isaiah 53:7: “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.”

Additionally, Jesus’ silence before Herod highlights the futility of seeking truth through mere intellectual inquiry or curiosity. Herod’s questioning was driven by personal interest, entertainment, and political intrigue, rather than a genuine desire to know the truth. Jesus recognized the insincerity of Herod’s intentions and chose not to engage in fruitless dialogue.

The episode with Herod reminds us that true understanding and acceptance of Jesus require genuine faith and a willingness to approach Him with an open heart. Jesus is not interested in superficial curiosity or fleeting entertainment; He seeks those who earnestly seek Him and are open to receiving the truth.

In conclusion, Luke 23:9 portrays Jesus’ silence before Herod as an act of submission to God’s will and a refusal to engage in empty dialogue with insincere individuals. It serves as a powerful reminder for us to approach Jesus with authentic faith and a genuine desire to know and follow Him.
