Luke 24:34

Listen to this article

“Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.”

Context:Luke 24:34 in the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible reads: This verse is part of the account of Jesus’ resurrection, specifically the events that occurred on the day of His resurrection. To understand the significance of Luke 24:34, it is helpful to examine the broader context of the passage.

In Luke 24, we read about the women who had visited the tomb of Jesus early in the morning and found it empty. They encountered angels who proclaimed that Jesus had risen from the dead. When the women reported this to the disciples, their words seemed like idle tales to them. However, Peter ran to the tomb to see for himself (Luke 24:1-12).

Later that day, two disciples were traveling to Emmaus when Jesus appeared to them, though they did not initially recognize Him. They walked and talked with Him, and as they reached their destination, they invited Jesus to stay with them. While breaking bread together, Jesus revealed Himself to them, and they recognized Him. However, He vanished from their sight (Luke 24:13-31).

After this encounter, the two disciples returned to Jerusalem and found the eleven apostles and other disciples gathered together. They were sharing their own experiences of the risen Lord when suddenly Jesus appeared among them, saying, “Peace be unto you” (Luke 24:36). This is the setting for the verse in question, Luke 24:34.

In Luke 24:34, the disciples were sharing their testimonies of encountering the risen Jesus, and they were informed that Simon Peter had also seen the Lord. The exact details of Peter’s encounter with Jesus are not given in this verse, but it highlights the fact that Jesus had appeared to him as well.

The significance of this verse lies in the confirmation of Jesus’ resurrection. The disciples had heard reports from the women, the two travelers to Emmaus, and now Simon Peter. This verse serves as an affirmation that Jesus had indeed risen from the dead and had personally appeared to multiple individuals.

The resurrection of Jesus is a pivotal event in Christianity. It validates His claims to be the Son of God and the Messiah. It demonstrates His victory over sin and death, providing hope and assurance to believers that they too can have eternal life through faith in Him.
