Luke 24:49
“And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.”
Context:This verse is part of the passage where Jesus appears to His disciples after His resurrection. He is instructing them before His ascension into heaven.
The Promise of the Father:Jesus mentions that He is sending the promise of the Father upon the disciples. This promise refers to the Holy Spirit, which Jesus had previously spoken about. In John 14:16-17, Jesus said, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever, even the Spirit of truth.”
Endued with Power from on High:Jesus tells His disciples to stay in Jerusalem until they are “endued with power from on high.” This power refers to the power of the Holy Spirit. In Acts 1:8, Jesus elaborates on this promise, saying, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
Waiting in Jerusalem:Jesus instructs the disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they receive the power of the Holy Spirit. This waiting period was crucial because they were about to embark on a great mission to spread the Gospel throughout the world. They needed to be equipped with the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit before they could effectively carry out this mission.
Application for believers today:Although this instruction was specifically given to the disciples at that time, there are important principles we can draw from this verse for our own lives. We, too, need the power of the Holy Spirit to fulfil our calling and be effective witnesses for Christ. Like the disciples, we need to seek the presence and power of the Holy Spirit through prayer and waiting on God. The Holy Spirit empowers us, teaches us, and guides us in our walk with God.
