Luke 4:2

Listen to this article

“Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.”

Context:Luke 4:2 is part of the narrative of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness. This event took place immediately after Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist and before He began His public ministry.

Key Points:

  • Forty days tempted of the devil:After Jesus was baptized, He was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Jesus willingly faced this trial, allowing Himself to be tested, demonstrating His victory over temptation and His qualification as the sinless Savior.
  • Eating nothing:During the forty days in the wilderness, Jesus fasted and abstained from eating any food. Fasting is a spiritual practice often used for seeking God’s guidance, strengthening one’s faith, and demonstrating dependence on God.
  • Hunger:After the forty days of fasting, Jesus experienced physical hunger. This emphasizes His human nature and highlights the significance of the temptations He faced.

Lessons and Application:

  • The reality of spiritual warfare:Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness reminds us that spiritual battles are real. Satan seeks to tempt and deceive believers, but Jesus provides an example of how to overcome these temptations by relying on the Word of God.
  • The power of fasting:Fasting can be a powerful spiritual discipline. By denying ourselves physically, we can focus more intently on our relationship with God. It can help us draw near to Him, seek His will, and gain victory over the flesh.
  • Jesus as the perfect example:In His temptation, Jesus demonstrated His sinlessness and His ability to overcome temptation. He serves as a perfect example for believers to follow, showing us that victory over sin and temptation is possible through reliance on God and His Word.
  • Dependence on God’s Word:When tempted, Jesus countered with the Word of God. Memorizing and meditating on Scripture equips believers to resist temptation, discern truth from deception, and find strength in God’s promises.
  • The humanity of Jesus:Jesus experienced physical hunger during His time in the wilderness, reminding us that He fully shared in our human experiences and struggles. He can empathize with our weaknesses and is able to provide help and grace when we face challenges.

In conclusion, Luke 4:2 portrays Jesus being tempted by the devil after a forty-day fast in the wilderness. This event teaches us valuable lessons about spiritual warfare, the power of fasting, Jesus as our example, dependence on God’s Word, and the humanity of Jesus.
