Luke 4:32

Posted on 18 May at 14:08

And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his worde was with power. Luke 4:32 (KJV)

This verse is part of the narrative where Jesus taught in the synagogue in Capernaum. Earlier, in Nazareth, Jesus had read from the scroll of the prophet Isaiah and proclaimed that the scripture had been fulfilled, but in the Capernaum episode there is no record of a similar reading. The people in the synagogue were amazed at the authority and power with which Jesus spoke.

Astonishment at Jesus’ doctrine: The people in the synagogue were astonished at Jesus’ teaching or doctrine. The word “doctrine” refers to the teachings or instructions that Jesus imparted to the people. Unlike the scribes and Pharisees who relied on tradition and legalism, Jesus taught with a unique authority that captivated His audience.

The word of Jesus with power: The verse highlights that Jesus’ word was accompanied by power. His teachings were not mere words but carried a divine authority and ability to transform lives. Jesus’ authority stemmed from His identity as the Son of God and His close relationship with the Father.

Implications for us: This verse reminds us of the unique authority and power of Jesus’ teachings. As followers of Christ, we can find assurance and guidance in His words. Jesus’ teachings have the power to transform us and bring about spiritual growth. We are called to not only listen to His words but also to apply them in our lives.

Application in our lives: Just as the people in the synagogue were astonished by Jesus’ teachings, we should approach the Scriptures with awe and reverence. When we read and study the Bible, we should seek to understand its message and allow it to impact our lives. By applying the teachings of Jesus, we can experience transformation and share His truth with others.

In summary, Luke 4:32 emphasizes the authority and power of Jesus’ teachings. The people were astonished at His doctrine because His words carried divine power. As followers of Christ, we can be encouraged to approach the Scriptures with reverence, seeking to understand and apply Jesus’ teachings in our lives. By doing so, we can experience the transformative power of His word.
