Listen to this article

“And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.”

Context:Luke 4:36 is part of the larger passage in Luke 4:31-37, which describes Jesus’ ministry in Capernaum. In this specific verse, Jesus has just cast out an unclean spirit from a man in the synagogue. The people witnessing this miracle were astonished by Jesus’ authority and power.

Jesus’ Authority:The people in the synagogue were amazed because Jesus commanded the unclean spirit with authority. Unlike the religious leaders of the time, Jesus didn’t rely on quoting other authorities or traditions but spoke with divine authority. This demonstrated that Jesus had power and dominion over the spiritual realm.

Power over Evil:Jesus’ ability to command the unclean spirits and cast them out reveals His power over evil forces. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus frequently confronted and defeated demonic powers, demonstrating His victory over the kingdom of darkness. This displays His divine nature and the fulfilment of Old Testament prophecies regarding the coming Messiah.

The Word of Jesus:The people’s response, “What a word is this!” emphasizes the impact of Jesus’ words. His words carried authority, truth, and power. This shows that Jesus’ words were not ordinary human words but had a divine origin. Jesus’ teaching and preaching were often accompanied by signs and miracles, pointing to His identity as the Son of God.

Application:Luke 4:36 reminds us of the unique authority and power of Jesus Christ. As believers, we can take comfort in knowing that Jesus has conquered the powers of darkness and has authority over all spiritual forces. We can trust in His word, knowing that it carries power and truth. Just as Jesus commanded the unclean spirits to come out, He can also bring deliverance and freedom in our lives today.

  • In summary, Luke 4:36 highlights the awe-inspiring authority and power of Jesus Christ over the spiritual realm. It reveals His divine nature and underscores the impact of His words. As followers of Jesus, we can find hope and confidence in His ability to overcome evil and bring freedom to our lives.
