Luke 4:38
“And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon’s house. And Simon’s wife’s mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.”
Context:In this verse, we find Jesus in Capernaum, a city in Galilee. He had just been teaching in the synagogue and performing miracles there. After leaving the synagogue, Jesus enters the house of Simon (also known as Peter). Simon’s mother-in-law is sick with a high fever, and the people in the house seek Jesus’ help on her behalf.
Jesus’ Compassion:This verse reveals the compassionate nature of Jesus. He not only preached in the synagogue, but He also cared for the physical needs of people. Jesus showed love and concern for Simon’s mother-in-law by responding to the request for healing. This shows us that Jesus is not only concerned about our spiritual well-being but also our physical well-being.
Healing Power:The fever mentioned in the verse is described as “great,” indicating its severity. Yet, the people believed that Jesus could bring healing to her. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus frequently performed miracles of healing, demonstrating His divine power and authority over sickness and disease. This verse reminds us that Jesus has the power to heal and bring restoration to our lives, even in seemingly hopeless situations.
Intercessory Prayer:Simon and the others in the house “besought” Jesus for Simon’s mother-in-law. They interceded on her behalf, recognizing that Jesus had the ability to help her. This highlights the importance of prayer in our lives. We can approach Jesus with our requests and bring the needs of others before Him. God invites us to pray for one another, trusting in His compassion and power to bring about healing and transformation.
The Response of Jesus:Let’s continue reading the following verses to see how Jesus responded to their request for healing. Luke 4:39 (KJV) says, “And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.” Jesus stood over Simon’s mother-in-law, rebuked the fever, and it left her immediately. She was healed and able to serve those present. This demonstrates the authority of Jesus over sickness and His ability to bring immediate and complete healing.
In conclusion, Luke 4:38 portrays Jesus’ compassion, healing power, and the significance of intercessory prayer. It reminds us that we can bring our physical and spiritual needs to Jesus, trusting in His ability to bring restoration and healing to our lives. Just as Simon and the others sought Jesus’ help, we too can approach Him with confidence, knowing that He cares for us and has the power to answer our prayers.
