Luke 4:4

Posted on 18 May at 14:42
Listen to this article

“And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.”

Context:In Luke 4:1-13, we find the account of Jesus being tempted by the devil in the wilderness. After fasting for forty days, Jesus was hungry, and the devil tempted Him to turn stones into bread. It is in response to this temptation that Jesus utters the words mentioned in Luke 4:4.

Dependence on God’s Word:Jesus responds to the devil’s temptation by quoting from Deuteronomy 8:3, where Moses tells the Israelites about their wilderness experience and how God fed them with manna. The verse emphasizes the fact that human beings do not solely rely on physical sustenance, such as bread, but also on the spiritual nourishment found in the Word of God.

Spiritual Nourishment:Jesus’ response highlights the significance of prioritizing spiritual sustenance over physical needs. While physical food is necessary for survival, Jesus emphasizes that a person’s true sustenance and life come from the Word of God. This teaches us that our spiritual well-being is crucial and should not be neglected in favour of solely pursuing material needs or desires.

The Authority of Scripture:By responding to the devil’s temptation with Scripture, Jesus establishes the authority and power of God’s Word. He demonstrates that the Word of God is a reliable and trustworthy source for guidance and strength. It serves as a weapon against temptation and deception.

Application:This verse reminds us of the importance of regularly engaging with and meditating on God’s Word. It is through the Scriptures that we can find guidance, encouragement, and wisdom for our daily lives. Just as physical food is necessary for our bodies, spiritual nourishment from the Word of God is vital for our souls.

  • Balanced Living:While Jesus emphasizes the significance of spiritual nourishment, it does not mean that physical needs are unimportant. Rather, it teaches us to maintain a balance and not neglect either aspect of our lives. We are called to prioritise our relationship with God and His Word while also taking care of our physical well-being.

In conclusion, Luke 4:4 highlights the importance of relying on every word of God for spiritual nourishment and guidance in our lives. It reminds us to prioritise our relationship with God and His Word, recognising that true life is found not only in physical sustenance but also in the spiritual nourishment provided by God’s Word.
