Luke 4:8

Posted on 18 May at 14:42
Listen to this article

“And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.”

Context:Luke 4:8 is a part of the narrative where Jesus is being tempted by Satan in the wilderness. Prior to this verse, Satan had offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the world if He would worship him. In response, Jesus rebukes Satan with these words.

Identification of Satan:In this verse, Jesus addresses Satan directly, recognizing him as the tempter and deceiver. Jesus acknowledges Satan’s presence and refuses to yield to his temptations.

Rejecting idolatry:Jesus’ response to Satan is a clear rejection of idolatry. He quotes from Deuteronomy 6:13, which is part of the Law given to the Israelites, emphasizing the importance of worshiping and serving only the Lord God. By quoting this scripture, Jesus affirms the supremacy and exclusivity of worshiping the one true God.

Prioritizing God’s worship and service:Jesus emphasizes that worship and service are to be directed solely to God. This statement highlights the need for wholehearted devotion to God and the rejection of any other object or being that seeks to take His place.

Resisting temptation:Jesus’ response to Satan demonstrates His unwavering commitment to remain faithful to God’s commands. He refuses to compromise His worship and service for personal gain or the temptations of the world. Jesus’ example teaches us the importance of standing firm in our faith and resisting the temptations that come our way.

  • Overall:Luke 4:8 reminds us of the importance of worshiping and serving God alone. It teaches us to recognize the presence of spiritual temptations and to stand firm against them, following the example of Jesus.
