Luke 6:25
“Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.”
Luke 6:25 is part of a larger passage known as the "Sermon on the Plain" delivered by Jesus. In this sermon, Jesus addresses His disciples and a great multitude, teaching them about various aspects of living a righteous and God-honoring life.
In this particular verse, Jesus pronounces "woe" or warning to those who are full and those who laugh now. It is important to note that Jesus is not speaking against being satisfied with physical food or experiencing joy, but rather He is addressing a spiritual attitude and mindset.
Warning to those who are full:The word "full" here refers to those who are self-satisfied and content with their worldly possessions, accomplishments, or material wealth. Jesus issues a warning to them, saying that they will experience hunger. This hunger refers to a spiritual hunger, a deep longing that cannot be satisfied by earthly possessions or achievements alone. It highlights the need for individuals to seek something beyond the temporal and material and to pursue a relationship with God, who alone can truly satisfy the human soul.
Warning to those who laugh now:The phrase "laugh now" refers to those who find their joy and happiness solely in worldly pleasures and temporal enjoyment. Jesus warns that such temporal laughter will eventually turn into mourning and weeping. This statement implies that those who prioritize temporal pleasures and neglect the eternal realities will ultimately face the consequences of their choices. True joy and lasting fulfilment come from aligning one’s life with God’s will and purpose, rather than pursuing fleeting and empty pleasures.
