Luke 6:8
But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise vp, and stand foorth in the mids. And he arose, and stood foorth. Luke 6:8 (KJV)
To understand the significance of this verse, it is helpful to examine the context in which it appears. In the preceding verses Jesus is in the synagogue on the Sabbath, and there is a man present with a withered hand. The religious leaders and Pharisees are watching Jesus closely, seeking an opportunity to accuse Him of breaking the Sabbath laws by healing on that day. In Luke 6:6‑7 the leaders are looking for something to charge Jesus with, and in verse 8 He perceives their thoughts and says to the man with the withered hand, “Rise up, and stand forth in the midst.” He then looks around at the crowd and asks them whether it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath. In the following verse (Luke 6:10) He heals the man, restoring the hand to full function.
This passage highlights several important aspects. First, Jesus’ omniscience: He demonstrates divine knowledge by perceiving the thoughts of the religious leaders. This emphasizes His authority and shows that He is aware of what is in people’s hearts and minds, and that He can discern true motives from mere appearances.
Second, Jesus’ compassion and power: Despite the skepticism and opposition of the leaders, He exhibits both compassion and divine power. He does not shy away from healing the man with the withered hand, even though it challenges their understanding of the Sabbath. His actions reveal a desire to alleviate suffering and restore wholeness to individuals.
Third, obedience and faith: The man with the withered hand demonstrates obedience and faith by responding to Jesus’ command to rise up and stand forth. His willingness to step forward in the midst of scrutiny and potential opposition indicates his trust in Jesus and his belief in the possibility of healing.
Application:
- a) Jesus is fully aware of our thoughts and intentions. We cannot hide anything from Him, so we should strive to align our hearts and minds with His teachings and seek to live in obedience to Him.
- b) Jesus is compassionate and powerful. He can heal and restore even in the face of opposition or criticism, and we can trust Him to bring healing and wholeness to our lives.
- c) Obedience and faith are essential. The man’s act of obedience and faith led to his healing; likewise, when we respond in obedience to Jesus’ commands and place our faith in Him, we open ourselves to experience His transformative power.
Overall, Luke 6:8 reminds us of Jesus’ omniscience, compassion, and power. It encourages us to respond to Him in obedience and faith, trusting that He knows our needs and has the ability to bring healing and restoration into our lives.
