Listen to this article

And there came a feare on all, and they glorified God, saying, that a great Prophet is risen vp among vs, and that God hath visited his people. Luke 7:16 (KJV)

Context: Luke 7:16 occurs within the narrative of Jesus raising a widow’s son from the dead in the city of Nain. The miracle astonished the onlookers and led them to recognize Jesus as a great prophet sent by God.

Fear and Glorification: The verse records that a fear came upon all the people. This fear was not a paralysing terror but a profound reverence sparked by witnessing God’s power displayed through Jesus’ act. In response, the crowd glorified God, acknowledging the divine authority behind the miracle.

Recognising Jesus as a Great Prophet: The people declared that a great prophet had risen up among them. Their proclamation highlights an understanding that Jesus was no ordinary man but one chosen and sent by God, fulfilling the prophetic expectations of their tradition.

God’s Visitation: Alongside the recognition of a prophet, the crowd proclaimed that God had visited His people through Jesus. This statement reflects their belief that the miracle was evidence of God’s direct intervention and presence among humanity.

Significance and Application: Luke 7:16 demonstrates how God’s miracles can evoke both awe and reverence, leading believers to glorify Him. When we experience or observe God’s power in our lives or in the lives of others, we too should respond with a respectful fear that turns into worship. Recognising God’s visitation and intervention strengthens our trust in His divine plan and providence, even amid difficulty.

Study Recommendation: To gain a fuller picture of this event, read the surrounding verses in Luke chapter 7. Doing so deepens understanding of the context and enriches personal faith. May this study encourage you to grow in reverence for God’s work and to acknowledge Jesus as the promised prophet and Son of God.
