Luke 7:3

Listen to this article

“And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.”

This verse is a part of the narrative in Luke’s Gospel where Jesus encounters a centurion who displays remarkable faith. The centurion, a Roman officer, sends the elders of the Jews to approach Jesus on his behalf, with a request to heal his servant who was gravely ill.

This passage highlights several significant aspects:

Recognition of Jesus:The centurion had heard about Jesus and His miraculous abilities to heal the sick. This demonstrates that news of Jesus’ ministry had spread, even reaching non-Jewish individuals.

The Centurion’s Humility:The centurion, being a Gentile, showed humility by sending the elders of the Jews to make the request instead of approaching Jesus directly. This indicates his respect for the Jewish religious leaders and his understanding of the cultural norms of the time.

Faith in Jesus’ Healing Power:The centurion’s request to Jesus reveals his unwavering faith. He believed that Jesus had the authority and ability to heal his servant from a distance. His faith is evident in his statement in Luke 7:7 (KJV): “Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.”

Recognition of Authority:The centurion acknowledged Jesus’ authority by comparing it to his own position as a military commander. He understood that just as he could issue commands to his soldiers and expect them to be obeyed, Jesus had authority over sickness and could command healing.

This passage offers valuable lessons for believers today:

  • a) Faith:The centurion’s faith serves as an example of unwavering trust in Jesus’ power and authority. It encourages us to have faith in Jesus and believe that He is able to accomplish the impossible.
  • b) Humility:Despite his influential position, the centurion demonstrated humility by approaching Jesus through intermediaries. We can learn from his humility and recognize that we are not self-sufficient but need to depend on God and seek His help.
  • c) Recognition of Jesus’ Authority:The centurion acknowledged Jesus’ authority over sickness and saw Him as someone worthy of respect and honor. Similarly, we should recognize Jesus’ authority over all aspects of our lives and submit to His lordship.
  • d) Inclusivity of God’s Kingdom:The fact that a Gentile centurion sought Jesus’ help highlights the inclusive nature of God’s kingdom. Jesus came not only for the Jews but also for all people, regardless of their background or social status.

In summary, Luke 7:3 portrays the centurion’s faith, humility, and recognition of Jesus’ authority. It encourages us to have unwavering faith, approach Jesus with humility, recognize His authority, and understand the inclusivity of God’s kingdom.
