Luke 7:8
“For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.”
Context:Luke 7:1-10 records the story of a centurion who seeks Jesus’ help to heal his servant. The centurion sends elders of the Jews to Jesus to request healing, but as Jesus approaches the centurion’s house, the centurion sends friends to convey a message to Jesus. This verse contains the centurion’s explanation of why he did not consider himself worthy for Jesus to enter his house.
Understanding the centurion’s perspective:The centurion acknowledges Jesus’ authority and power by comparing it to his own role as a military officer. He recognizes that he has soldiers under his command, and when he gives them orders, they obey. Similarly, he believes that Jesus has the authority to command healing for his servant without physically going to his house.
Faith and humility:The centurion’s statement reveals both faith and humility. He demonstrates faith by acknowledging Jesus’ authority and power to heal, even from a distance. Despite being a Gentile, the centurion displays a humble attitude, recognizing his unworthiness to have Jesus enter his home.
Jesus’ response:In the following verses (Luke 7:9-10), Jesus marvels at the centurion’s faith, saying, “I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.” Jesus grants the centurion’s request, and when the friends return to the centurion’s house, they find the servant healed.
Lessons for us:This passage teaches us several important lessons. Firstly, it highlights the power and authority of Jesus. The centurion recognized Jesus’ divine authority and believed in His ability to heal his servant. It encourages us to approach Jesus with faith, acknowledging His authority in our lives and trusting in His power to work miracles.
- Secondly, the centurion’s humility serves as a model for us. Despite his position of authority, he humbly recognizes his own unworthiness. We, too, should approach Jesus with humility, acknowledging our need for His mercy and grace.
Lastly, this passage emphasizes the importance of faith. The centurion’s faith impressed Jesus. We should strive to cultivate strong faith in Jesus, trusting in His ability to accomplish what seems impossible and believing in His willingness to help us.
In conclusion, Luke 7:8 presents us with the example of the centurion’s faith and humility. It challenges us to recognize Jesus’ authority, approach Him with humility, and exercise faith in His power to work in our lives.
