Luke 8:32

And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountaine: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them: and he suffered them. Luke 8:32 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the larger narrative of Luke 8:26‑39 (also recorded in Mark 5:12‑13), which tells of Jesus’ encounter with a demon‑possessed man in the region of the Gadarenes, also called the Gerasenes. Prior to the verse, Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to leave the man and had asked the demon its name; the demon answered, “Legion,” because many demons had entered the man. The demons then pleaded with Jesus, not to be cast into the abyss—a place of confinement for evil spirits—but to be allowed to enter a nearby herd of swine that were feeding on the mountain. Jesus granted their request, and the demons left the man and entered the swine.

The passage highlights several noteworthy points for reflection. First, it demonstrates Jesus’ supreme authority over demonic forces. The demons recognized His power and begged for mercy, knowing He could either command them to a specific place or cast them out entirely. Second, the demons’ request to enter the swine reveals their desire for a physical embodiment; even when expelled, they sought to possess another living creature in order to continue exerting influence and causing destruction. Third, the fate of the swine underscores the destructive nature of demonic influence. Once possessed, the herd rushed down a steep slope into the sea and drowned, showing how quickly evil can lead to ruin.

The local reaction further emphasizes the impact of the event. The herdsmen fled and reported what had happened to the townspeople. When the people arrived, they found the formerly possessed man sitting at Jesus’ feet, clothed and in his right mind, which left them in awe of Jesus’ power. Overall, this account illustrates Jesus’ authority over the spiritual realm, His ability to set people free from oppression, and the peril that accompanies demonic activity. It serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking Jesus for deliverance and protection.
