Luke 8:51
“And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden.”
Context:Luke 8:51 is part of the account of Jesus’ miraculous healing of Jairus’ daughter. Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, had approached Jesus and pleaded for Him to come and heal his dying daughter. Jesus agreed to go with him, but on the way, He was interrupted by the healing of the woman with the issue of blood. Afterward, messengers arrived to inform Jairus that his daughter had died. Despite the news, Jesus encouraged Jairus to believe and proceeded to the house.
Exclusivity of Witnesses:In this verse, we see that Jesus allowed only a select few individuals to enter the house with Him. Apart from Peter, James, and John, He also permitted the father and mother of the girl. By limiting the number of witnesses, Jesus ensured that the miracle would be witnessed by those who would later testify to its truthfulness. This exclusivity of witnesses emphasizes the importance of reliable testimonies and serves as evidence for the authenticity of Jesus’ miraculous acts.
Peter, James, and John:Throughout the Gospels, Peter, James, and John were often chosen by Jesus to accompany Him in significant moments. They were present at the transfiguration (Mark 9:2-8), the garden of Gethsemane (Mark 14:32-42), and now, the resurrection of Jairus’ daughter. These three disciples had a unique relationship with Jesus, witnessing His power and glory in remarkable ways. Their presence indicates a closer inner circle of disciples who had the privilege of experiencing more intimate moments with the Lord.
The Parents’ Presence:Jesus allowed the father and mother of the girl to be present during the miracle. This demonstrates Jesus’ compassion and sensitivity towards the parents who were grieving over the loss of their child. Jesus wanted to bring comfort to their hearts and strengthen their faith. By witnessing their daughter’s resurrection, they would become firsthand witnesses of Jesus’ power and glory. This would serve to strengthen their faith and become a testimony to others.
Faith and Belief:The presence of witnesses, both the disciples and the parents, highlights the importance of faith and belief. Jairus initially approached Jesus in faith, believing that He had the power to heal his daughter. Despite receiving news of her death, Jesus encouraged Jairus to hold on to his faith and belief. Through this miracle, Jesus not only restored the life of the young girl but also strengthened the faith of those who witnessed it.
Overall, Luke 8:51 reminds us of Jesus’ power over death, His compassion for the grieving, and the importance of faith and belief. It also highlights the significance of reliable witnesses who can testify to the truth of His miracles.
