Luke 8:54

Listen to this article

And hee put them all out, and tooke her by the hand, and called, saying, Mayd, arise. Luke 8:54 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the narrative in Luke 8:41‑56 where Jesus raises Jairus’ daughter from the dead. Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, had come to Jesus pleading for his dying daughter. While Jesus was on the way to Jairus’ house, a woman who had suffered a twelve‑year hemorrhage touched the fringe of His garment and was healed. Before Jesus could reach the home, messengers arrived to report that the girl had already died. Upon arriving, Jesus “put them all out,” removing the mourners who were weeping and wailing, then took the girl’s hand and spoke, “Maid, arise.” In the original Aramaic, He said, “Talitha cumi,” which means “Little girl, arise.”

Authority over death – By raising the young girl, Jesus displayed His power over death, confirming His divine authority as the Son of God. The miracle serves as a tangible demonstration that He can restore life where there seemed to be none.

Compassion and tenderness – Despite the skepticism and ridicule of the mourners, Jesus showed deep compassion toward the girl and her grieving father. Taking her by the hand signified His personal care and willingness to intervene in the most painful circumstances.

The importance of faith – Jairus approached Jesus with faith, trusting that He could heal his daughter. Even when the situation appeared hopeless, Jairus’ confidence in Jesus’ ability did not waver. This account teaches believers to hold fast to faith, especially when faced with overwhelming challenges.

The contrast between life and death – The passage juxtaposes the finality of death with the possibility of new life. Jesus transforms a scene of irreversible grief into one of restoration, underscoring His role as the giver of abundant life.

Luke 8:54 therefore highlights Jesus’ authority over death, His compassionate heart toward those who suffer, and the vital role of faith in approaching Him. It reminds us that, no matter how dire the circumstance, Jesus possesses the power to bring life and restoration to every situation.
