Luke 9:1

Posted on 18 May at 14:41

“Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.”

Context:Before Luke 9:1, Jesus had been teaching and performing miracles. In Luke 8, He calms a storm, casts out demons, heals the sick, and raises Jairus’ daughter from the dead. Jesus’ popularity is growing, and people are eager to follow Him.

Calling the Twelve Disciples:In this verse, Jesus calls His twelve disciples together. These twelve individuals were chosen by Jesus to be His closest followers and to continue His ministry after His ascension. The twelve disciples are named in Luke 6:14-16 and include well-known figures such as Peter, James, John, and Judas Iscariot.

Granting Power and Authority:Jesus bestowed upon His disciples both power and authority. This authority was not only limited to the physical realm but extended over spiritual forces as well. They were given power over demons and the ability to heal diseases, displaying the divine nature of Jesus’ ministry.

Symbolism and Lessons:This verse demonstrates Jesus’ divine power and His intention to impart His authority to His disciples. It shows that Jesus did not intend for His ministry to be confined to His own physical presence but desired to equip His disciples to continue His work.

  • Application:As believers today, we can draw lessons from this verse. We learn that Jesus has granted authority to His followers, empowering them to carry on His work. While we may not have the same miraculous abilities as the disciples, we can exercise authority through the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. This verse reminds us of the importance of using the authority and power given to us by Jesus to impact the lives of others positively.
