Listen to this article

“Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.”

Context:Luke 9:31 is part of the account known as the Transfiguration, where Jesus took Peter, James, and John up to a mountain to pray. While Jesus was praying, His appearance changed, and Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with Him about His upcoming death in Jerusalem. This event is recorded in Luke 9:28-36.

Glory revealed:The verse begins by stating that Jesus appeared in glory during the Transfiguration. His appearance was transformed, and His glory as the Son of God was revealed to the disciples present. The glory of Jesus signifies His divine nature and authority. This event confirmed His identity as the Messiah and gave the disciples a glimpse of His heavenly glory.

Speaking of His decease:Moses and Elijah, representing the Law and the Prophets, appeared and spoke with Jesus. The conversation focused on Jesus’ impending death in Jerusalem. This conversation highlights the central purpose of Jesus’ ministry, which was to offer Himself as a sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins. The term “decease” in this verse refers to Jesus’ crucifixion and His subsequent resurrection.

Accomplishing His mission:The verse emphasizes that Jesus would “accomplish” His death in Jerusalem. This choice of words highlights the purposefulness and determination with which Jesus approached His mission. His death and resurrection were not mere accidents or tragedies but a deliberate plan ordained by God for the redemption of humanity. Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross was necessary to fulfill God’s plan of salvation.

Spiritual significance:The Transfiguration and the conversation about Jesus’ death hold significant spiritual meanings. It indicates the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets in Jesus. Moses and Elijah represent the old covenant, and their presence confirms Jesus as the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets. The conversation about Jesus’ death also emphasizes the sacrificial nature of His mission, highlighting the importance of His atoning work on the cross for the forgiveness of sins.

Application to believers:Luke 9:31 reminds believers of the centrality of Jesus’ death and resurrection in the Christian faith. It underscores the significance of Jesus’ sacrifice as the means of salvation. As followers of Christ, we are called to understand and appreciate the purpose and magnitude of Jesus’ death on the cross. It is through His sacrifice that we receive forgiveness, reconciliation with God, and the hope of eternal life.

In conclusion, Luke 9:31 reveals the glorious appearance of Jesus during the Transfiguration and the conversation about His upcoming death in Jerusalem. It emphasises the purposeful nature of Jesus’ mission and the significance of His sacrifice for the salvation of humanity. This verse invites believers to reflect on the centrality of Jesus’ death and resurrection and to appreciate the depth of God’s love and plan of redemption.
