Luke 9:5
And whosoeuer will not receiue you, when ye goe out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feete, for a testimonie against them. Luke 9:5 (KJV)
This verse is part of Jesus’ instructions to His disciples as He sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and heal the sick (Luke 9:1‑6). He gave them authority and power and told them to take nothing for their journey, relying on the provision of those who would receive them.
Historical Background:
- The disciples were sent during Jesus’ earthly ministry, primarily to the towns and villages of Galilee.
- Jesus’ ministry encountered acceptance, rejection, and indifference.
- Shaking off the dust from one’s feet was a symbolic gesture of disassociation or disapproval.
Key Themes and Lessons:
a. Proclamation of the Kingdom – Jesus sent the disciples to announce the arrival of God’s reign in the hearts of people, a message of salvation, repentance, and reconciliation.
b. The Importance of Receiving – Those who received the disciples also received the message they carried, opening themselves to the blessings of the kingdom.
c. Responsiveness and Rejection – Not everyone would receive the disciples; some would reject the message, reflecting the broader rejection of Christ. The instruction to shake off the dust signified a clear separation from those who refused.
d. A Testimony Against Them – The act served as a testimony against the rejecters, indicating that the opportunity for salvation had been presented and declined, and warning of the consequences of rejecting God’s messengers.
Application:
Faithful Proclamation – Believers today are called to proclaim the kingdom of God with diligence, sharing the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ while demonstrating love, grace, and truth.
Responding to Rejection – When faced with rejection or indifference, we should not be discouraged. Instead, we shake off the dust and continue our mission, trusting God with the results.
Respectful Disassociation – Shaking off the dust is not an act of retaliation but a respectful gesture of disassociation, maintaining a gracious attitude toward those who reject the gospel.
Bearing Witness – The symbolic act reminds us that our actions and responses bear witness to the gospel. Our love, integrity, and perseverance in the face of rejection can draw others toward Christ.
The primary message of Luke 9:5 is to faithfully proclaim the kingdom, respond with grace to rejection, and let our conduct testify to the truth of the gospel.
