Malachi 2:4
And yee shall know that I haue sent this commaundement vnto you, that my couenant might be with Leui, saith the Lord of hostes. Malachi 2:4 (KJV)
Malachi is one of the twelve minor prophets in the Old Testament. He prophesied during a time when the Israelites had returned from their exile in Babylon and were facing spiritual and moral decline. The book of Malachi addresses the people’s unfaithfulness to God and His response to their actions. In chapter 2, God rebukes the priests for their corrupt practices and violation of the covenant.
In Malachi 2:4 God states that He sent a commandment to the priests (or to the children of Israel) to remind them of His covenant, that they might keep His ways and hold fast the covenant. This commandment was intended to restore the people’s understanding and adherence to their responsibilities as custodians of the covenant.
The covenant with Levi refers to the special agreement God made with the tribe of Levi. In Numbers (3:11‑13, 8:5‑22) God designated the Levites to be responsible for the service of the tabernacle and the priesthood. They were to assist Aaron and his descendants in carrying out the rituals and sacrifices, to lead the people in worship, to teach the law, and to maintain the sanctity of the tabernacle.
God sent this commandment to remind the priests of their duty and to emphasize the importance of their role in upholding the covenant. The priests had deviated from their responsibilities, showing disrespect for God and offering unacceptable sacrifices. Through this commandment God sought to correct their behaviour, restore their understanding of the covenant, and bring them back to faithful service.
Faithful Service: As believers today we are part of a new covenant through Jesus Christ (Hebrews 8:6‑13). While we are not part of the Levitical priesthood, we are called to serve God faithfully in various capacities. We should examine our hearts and actions, ensuring that we fulfill our responsibilities with integrity, sincerity, and reverence.
Reverence for God: The priests in Malachi’s time had lost their reverence for God. Likewise it is crucial for us to maintain a deep reverence for God, to honour Him, respect His Word, and approach Him with humility and awe. This reverence will be reflected in our worship, relationships, and obedience to His commands.
Faithful Stewards: The priests were entrusted with the sacred duties of the tabernacle and priesthood. Likewise, as Christians we are called to be faithful stewards of the resources, gifts, and opportunities God has given us, using them wisely for His glory and the benefit of others.
Restoration and Correction: God sent the commandment out of His love, desiring the priests’ restoration and correction. His discipline is meant to draw us closer to Him, deepen our relationship, and help us grow in faith. We should be open to God’s correction and allow Him to transform us into the image of Christ.
Remember, as we study and apply God’s Word it is essential to read it in context, considering the broader message and the principles that apply to our lives today.
