Mark 12:17

Listen to this article

“And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s. And they marvelled at him.”

Context:In Mark 12:13-17, the Pharisees and the Herodians approached Jesus with a question about paying taxes to the Roman government.

They sought to create a dilemma for Jesus: If He said it was lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, the people who despised Roman rule might turn against Him. But if He said it was not lawful, the religious leaders could report Him to the Roman authorities for inciting rebellion.

Submission to Civil Authorities:Jesus’ response, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s,” acknowledges the authority of the government in certain matters.

He teaches that believers should fulfill their civic responsibilities, including paying taxes and obeying the laws of the land.

Recognizing God’s Sovereignty:The second part of Jesus’ response, “and to God the things that are God’s,” emphasizes the priority of our devotion and obedience to God.

It reminds us that while we have obligations to earthly authorities, our ultimate allegiance and worship belong to God alone.

Balance and Discernment:Jesus’ answer reveals the need for balance and discernment in our lives.

We have responsibilities both to the earthly realm and the spiritual realm.

We should fulfill our civic duties while also recognizing the higher authority of God.

The Marvel of Jesus’ Wisdom:The verse concludes with the statement, “And they marvelled at him.”

Jesus’ response impressed the religious leaders because of its wisdom and insight.

  • Faith and Obedience:This verse challenges us to be obedient to both earthly authorities and God, prioritizing our allegiance to God while fulfilling our responsibilities in society.
  • Integrity:We should maintain integrity in all areas of our lives, living with balance and discernment, without compromising our devotion to God.
  • Wisdom and Witness:By responding wisely and thoughtfully to worldly challenges, we can bear witness to the truth of the Gospel and bring glory to God.
  • The Supremacy of God:Ultimately, this verse points us to the fact that God is supreme over all aspects of our lives.
