Mark 13:1

Posted on 18 May at 14:43

“And as he went out of the temple, one of his disciples saith unto him, Master, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here!”

This verse is part of a larger section known as the Olivet Discourse, where Jesus delivers a prophetic message to His disciples regarding the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem and the signs of the end times.

Here are some key points to consider in this verse:

Setting:The verse begins by mentioning that Jesus and His disciples were leaving the temple. It is important to note that the temple in Jerusalem was a magnificent structure, and the disciples were marveling at its grandeur.

Disciples’ observation:One of the disciples remarked to Jesus, calling Him “Master” and drawing His attention to the impressive stones and buildings of the temple. This comment reflects the disciples’ awe and admiration for the temple’s architecture.

Jesus’ response:The following verses (Mark 13:2-4) describe Jesus’ response to the disciples’ observation. He warns them of the temple’s destruction, saying, “Seest thou these great buildings? There shall not be left one stone upon another that shall not be thrown down” (Mark 13:2, KJV).

Prophecy and teaching:In the subsequent verses (Mark 13:5-37), Jesus expands upon the disciples’ question and gives them a detailed account of the signs that will precede His second coming and the end of the age. He speaks about false messiahs, wars, earthquakes, persecution, and the abomination of desolation. Jesus emphasizes the need for watchfulness and readiness, urging His followers to remain faithful amidst tribulation.

This verse and the subsequent discourse are significant because they reveal Jesus’ foreknowledge of the temple’s destruction and His teachings about the end times. It serves as a reminder that even the most impressive human achievements and structures are temporary and subject to change. Jesus encourages His disciples, and all believers, to fix their hope on Him and be prepared for His return.
