Mark 13:22

Posted on 18 May at 14:43

“For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.”

Certainly! Let’s dive into a Bible study on Mark 13:22 in the King James Version (KJV). Mark 13:22 says:

This verse is part of a larger passage known as the Olivet Discourse, where Jesus speaks to His disciples about the signs of the end times and the coming of the Son of Man. In this particular verse, Jesus warns about the rise of false Christs and false prophets who will perform signs and wonders to deceive people, even the elect.

Here are some key points to consider in understanding this verse:

  • 1. The Reality of False Christs and False Prophets: Jesus acknowledges that there will be individuals who claim to be Christ or speak on behalf of God, but they will not be genuine. They will attempt to mislead people with their false teachings and miraculous displays.
  • 2. Signs and Wonders: False Christs and false prophets may perform signs and wonders that could deceive people. These signs and wonders might be supernatural in nature, leading some to believe that these individuals possess divine power. However, these displays should not be taken as evidence of genuine spiritual authority or truth.
  • 3. Seduction and Deception: The purpose of these false Christs and false prophets is to seduce or deceive people, particularly those who are believers (the elect). They may use their signs and wonders to lead people astray, causing confusion and undermining the faith of some.
  • 4. The Elect: Jesus mentions that even the elect, referring to true believers, could potentially be deceived if it were possible. This statement emphasizes the subtlety and persuasive nature of the false Christs and false prophets. However, Jesus’ use of “if it were possible” suggests that although they may face great challenges, true believers will ultimately remain faithful to Him.

This verse serves as a warning for believers to be discerning and cautious when encountering individuals claiming to be Christ or speaking on behalf of God. It reminds us to test everything against the truth of God’s Word (1 John 4:1) and rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit to recognize and reject falsehood.
