Mark 14:18

Listen to this article

And as they sate, and did eat, Iesus said, Uerily I say vnto you, one of you which eateth with me, shall betray mee. Mark 14:18 (KJV)

This verse is part of the account of the Last Supper, where Jesus gathered with His disciples to share a final meal before His crucifixion. The setting emphasizes the intimacy and familiarity of the occasion, as it was a customary Jewish Passover meal in which Jesus and His followers were sitting and eating together.

Jesus made a significant statement to His disciples, asserting, “One of you which eateth with me shall betray me.” In saying this, He reveals that one of His close companions, someone who shares the meal with Him, will act as a betrayer. The declaration foreshadows the impending betrayal by Judas Iscariot, who would later hand Jesus over to the religious leaders for thirty pieces of silver.

The mention of betrayal carries deep meaning. It points to the fulfillment of prophecy and underscores the severity of the act, for Jesus, who had spent years teaching, leading, and loving His disciples, would be betrayed by one of His closest friends. This highlights the human experience of Jesus and the profound challenges He faced during His earthly ministry.

The phrase “Verily I say unto you” signifies the certainty and authority of Jesus’ words, highlighting His divine knowledge and understanding of future events. Fully aware of what was to come, He disclosed the betrayal openly to His disciples, demonstrating both His foreknowledge and His willingness to confront the coming suffering.

Overall, Mark 14:18 encapsulates the poignant moment during the Last Supper when Jesus reveals that one of His closest followers would betray Him, adding a layer of solemnity and foreshadowing to the narrative. It reminds us of the depth of Jesus’ love for humanity and His willingness to face betrayal and sacrifice Himself for our redemption.
