Mark 14:25

Posted on 18 May at 14:43
Listen to this article

“Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

Context:Mark 14:25 is part of the narrative of Jesus’ Last Supper with His disciples. He has just instituted the Lord’s Supper or Communion, where He broke bread and shared the cup, symbolizing His body and blood. This verse occurs right after Jesus shares the cup with His disciples.

Symbolism of the fruit of the vine:The “fruit of the vine” refers to wine, which was a common beverage during Jesus’ time and often associated with joy and celebration. In the context of the Last Supper, the wine represents Jesus’ blood, which would soon be shed for the forgiveness of sins (Matthew 26:28). By sharing the cup with His disciples, Jesus was establishing a new covenant with them.

Anticipation of the future:Jesus says, “until that day.” This indicates that there will be a future time when He will partake of the fruit of the vine again. This statement suggests an anticipation of a future fellowship and celebration with His disciples in the kingdom of God.

The kingdom of God:Jesus refers to the future kingdom of God. This refers to the ultimate reign of God when His rule and authority will be fully established on earth. It signifies the culmination of God’s redemptive plan and the ultimate fulfillment of His promises.

The promise of future fellowship:Jesus’ statement implies a promise of future communion and celebration with His disciples in the kingdom of God. It reveals the anticipation of a joyous reunion and a time of fellowship beyond what they experienced in their earthly lives.

Spiritual application:This verse reminds believers of the hope and anticipation we have in Jesus Christ. Just as Jesus promised His disciples a future fellowship in the kingdom of God, we can be assured of our future hope and communion with Him. It encourages us to look forward to the ultimate fulfillment of God’s kingdom, where we will experience the fullness of joy and perfect communion with Him.

In conclusion, Mark 14:25 captures Jesus’ promise of a future fellowship and celebration with His disciples in the kingdom of God. It reminds us of the hope we have in Christ and encourages us to anticipate the fulfillment of God’s kingdom when we will experience perfect communion with Him.
