Listen to this article

And they come vnto him, bringing one sicke of the palsie, which was borne of foure. Mark 2:3 (KJV)

Mark 2:3 is part of a larger narrative in the Gospel of Mark. In this chapter Jesus is teaching in a house, and a large crowd gathers to hear Him. The passage specifically focuses on a paralyzed man who is brought to Jesus for healing. The verse provides a glimpse into the faith and determination of the man’s friends who carry him to Jesus.

The phrase “one sick of the palsy” refers to a person afflicted with paralysis, likely caused by a condition known as palsy or palsy‑like symptoms. This person was unable to walk or move normally, highlighting the physical suffering that people experienced during Jesus’ time. The verse does not specify how many people carried the man, though later in Mark 2:5 the friends of the paralytic are identified, showing that they played a key role in bringing him to Jesus. Their action of carrying him demonstrates their compassion and their belief that Jesus could heal their friend.

Lessons and Themes:

  • a. Faith and Intercession – The friends of the paralytic demonstrated great faith and compassion by carrying him to Jesus. Their act of intercession highlights the importance of coming alongside those who are suffering and bringing them to Christ in prayer and support.
  • b. Jesus’ Healing Power – This passage showcases the healing power of Jesus. The friends’ efforts were rewarded when Jesus saw their faith and responded by healing the man, emphasizing His authority and compassion toward physical infirmities.
  • c. Community and Friendship – The story highlights the value of community and friendship. The paralytic’s friends selflessly carried him, displaying deep solidarity and teaching the importance of supporting one another in times of need.

Application:

  • a. Faith in Action – The account challenges believers to put faith into action, being willing to go to great lengths to bring others to Jesus, especially those in desperate need of His healing and grace.
  • b. Compassion and Support – Believers are called to demonstrate compassion and support for those who suffer, whether through prayer, practical help, or encouragement.
  • c. Intercession – The passage encourages interceding on behalf of others, bringing people before Jesus in prayer and trusting in His intervention and healing.
