Mark 3:32

“And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee.”

Context:It is important to understand the context in which this verse occurs. In Mark 3:20-21, Jesus was in a house preaching to a large crowd. His family, including His mother and brothers, came to the house. However, due to the size of the crowd, they were unable to reach Jesus.

The Multitude:The verse begins by mentioning the multitude that sat around Jesus. This indicates that there were many people gathered to hear Him teach. The presence of a large crowd was a common occurrence during Jesus’ ministry.

Seeking Jesus:The crowd informed Jesus that His mother and brethren were outside seeking Him. This demonstrates their concern for His family and their desire to inform Him of their presence. The term “brethren” here refers to His close relatives, likely His brothers, who are mentioned in Mark 6:3.

Jesus’ Response:Mark 3:33-35 continues the passage by recording Jesus’ response to the crowd’s message. Jesus uses this opportunity to teach about spiritual relationships. He stretches out His hand toward His disciples and declares that those who do the will of God are His mother, brothers, and sisters. Jesus emphasizes the importance of spiritual kinship and the unity of those who follow Him.

Spiritual Family:Jesus’ response in this passage highlights the significance of spiritual relationships over biological relationships. He teaches that true kinship is not solely based on blood ties, but rather on shared obedience to God’s will. This emphasizes the spiritual unity and familial bond that believers have in Christ, regardless of their earthly family ties.

  • Application:This passage prompts us to reflect on the nature of our relationships within the body of Christ.
