Mark 8:24

Posted on 18 May at 14:46
Listen to this article

“And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking.”

Context:In this passage, Jesus is approached by some people who brought a blind man to Him, seeking healing. Jesus takes the blind man by the hand and leads him out of the village of Bethsaida. Then, He spits on the man’s eyes, lays His hands on him, and asks if he sees anything. The blind man responds with the words found in Mark 8:24.

The blind man’s response, “I see men as trees, walking,” may seem peculiar at first. However, it is important to consider the larger context and the purpose of this particular miracle. This account showcases Jesus’ healing power and serves as a progressive miracle.

Some scholars suggest that the blind man’s initial partial sight symbolises a gradual spiritual illumination. It is as if the blind man’s vision is being restored gradually, with the image of trees first appearing as people walking. This gradual healing is unique in the Gospels and may convey a deeper message.

The gradual restoration of the blind man’s sight might symbolise the gradual understanding and revelation that people experience as they encounter Jesus. Just as the blind man’s sight was initially imperfect and improved over time, people’s spiritual understanding can develop and deepen as they walk with Christ. It emphasises the importance of spiritual growth and the transformative power of encountering Jesus.

Furthermore, this passage may also convey the idea that spiritual insight requires a process. The blind man’s sight was initially distorted, but he didn’t lose hope. Instead, he trusted Jesus, who then continued the work of healing until the man’s sight was fully restored. Similarly, our spiritual growth and understanding often involve a journey of ongoing transformation and reliance on God’s work in our lives.

Overall, Mark 8:24 encourages us to trust in Jesus and His ability to gradually bring clarity and understanding to our lives. It reminds us that spiritual growth can be a process, and our journey with Christ involves continuous learning and transformation.
