Mark 8:3

Posted on 18 May at 14:09
Listen to this article

And if I send them away fasting to their owne houses, they will faint by the way: for diuers of them came from farre. Mark 8:3 (KJV)

This verse is part of the account of Jesus feeding the multitude with seven loaves of bread and a few small fish. In Mark 8:1‑10 Jesus had been teaching a large crowd that had gathered to listen to Him. The crowd had been with Him for three days and had run out of food. Moved with compassion, He decided to perform a miraculous feeding to satisfy their hunger.

Jesus’ Concern for the Crowd: In Mark 8:2 Jesus expresses His compassion, saying, “I have compassion on the multitude because they have now been with me three days and have nothing to eat.” This emphasizes His concern for their physical well‑being and His desire to meet their needs.

The Disciples’ Concern: In Mark 8:3 the disciples voice a practical worry, saying, “We have no bread, only one loaf,” and noting that they had only a few small fishes. Their comment reflects the apparent impossibility of feeding such a large group with the limited resources they possessed and the fear that the people would become weak and faint on the way home.

Jesus’ Response: In the following verses (Mark 8:4‑10) Jesus performs a miraculous feeding, multiplying seven loaves of bread and a few small fish to feed the entire crowd. In the end there were seven baskets filled with leftover fragments, symbolising the abundance of God’s provision.

Key Themes and Lessons:

(a) Compassion and Provision – the passage highlights Jesus’ deep compassion for the people and His ability to provide for their needs, demonstrating divine power to multiply a meager amount of food.

(b) Physical and Spiritual Hunger – while the crowd experienced physical hunger, Jesus used the situation to teach about spiritual hunger and the need for nourishment that comes from God, later referring to Himself as the “bread of life.”

(c) Faith and Trust – the disciples’ concern reveals their limited perspective and lack of faith in Jesus’ ability to provide; the miracle challenges their faith and demonstrates His power.

Application:

Trust in God’s Provision – the passage encourages us to trust in God’s provision even when circumstances seem impossible, relying on His compassion to meet both physical and spiritual needs.

Compassion for Others – Jesus’ example compels us to show care for those around us, meeting physical needs and sharing the message of Christ.

Strengthening Faith – as Jesus challenged the disciples to trust Him, we are reminded to deepen our faith and confidence in His power and provision.

In summary, Mark 8:3 contributes to the narrative of the miraculous feeding, highlighting Jesus’ compassion, provision, and the disciples’ initial lack of faith. It calls believers to trust in God’s provision, show compassion to others, and strengthen their faith in Jesus.
