Mark 9:10

Posted on 18 May at 14:46

“And they kept that saying with themselves, questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean.”

This verse is part of a larger narrative in the Gospel of Mark where Jesus had just been transfigured before Peter, James, and John on a high mountain. After the transfiguration, as they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus instructed them not to tell anyone what they had seen until after His resurrection from the dead. However, the disciples didn’t fully understand what Jesus meant by “rising from the dead.”

Context:In the preceding verses (Mark 9:1-9), Jesus had taken Peter, James, and John up to a high mountain, where He was transfigured before them. His appearance changed, and He spoke with Moses and Elijah. This experience was a glimpse of His glory and confirmed His divine nature.

Questioning among themselves:After witnessing this remarkable event, the disciples were perplexed by Jesus’ statement about rising from the dead. They likely had previous knowledge of the concept of resurrection, as it was a topic discussed among Jewish religious circles. However, they didn’t grasp how it applied to Jesus or the significance of His words.

Lack of understanding:The disciples’ confusion and questioning reveal their limited understanding of Jesus’ mission and the nature of His kingdom. They were expecting a physical kingdom with an earthly reign, and the concept of a resurrection seemed puzzling and unfamiliar to them. Their understanding of Jesus’ identity and purpose was still developing.

Foreshadowing the resurrection:While the disciples may not have understood Jesus’ words at the time, His statement about rising from the dead was a prophetic reference to His impending crucifixion, death, and resurrection. Jesus was alluding to the ultimate victory over sin and death that He would achieve through His sacrificial death and triumphant resurrection.

Spiritual growth and revelation:It’s essential to note that the disciples’ lack of comprehension in this instance doesn’t discount their overall growth and understanding later on. As the Gospel narratives progress, their understanding of Jesus’ mission deepens, especially after His resurrection and the subsequent outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

In summary, Mark 9:10 captures the disciples’ confusion and discussion regarding Jesus’ statement about rising from the dead. Their lack of understanding at this point reflects their incomplete comprehension of Jesus’ mission and the nature of His kingdom. However, this verse also serves as a foreshadowing of Jesus’ impending death and resurrection, which would ultimately bring redemption and eternal life to all who believe in Him.
