Mark 9:14
“And when he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes questioning with them.”
Context:Mark 9:14-29 is part of a larger narrative known as the transfiguration of Jesus. In this particular section, Jesus and three of His disciples-Peter, James, and John-have just descended from the mountain where Jesus was transfigured before them. As they return to the rest of the disciples, they find a crowd and some scribes engaged in a discussion.
The Multitude:The verse begins by stating that Jesus saw a “great multitude” surrounding His disciples. This implies that the disciples were not alone but were surrounded by people. The presence of a large crowd indicates the popularity and attention that Jesus and His disciples were attracting during His ministry.
The Scribes:The verse also mentions that the scribes were questioning with the disciples. Scribes were experts in Jewish law and were known for their knowledge and authority in interpreting and teaching the Scriptures. Their involvement in the discussion with the disciples suggests a conflict or disagreement regarding a matter of faith or doctrine.
Significance:This verse sets the stage for the encounter that follows between Jesus, His disciples, and the scribes. The ensuing conversation revolves around a demon-possessed boy whom the disciples were unable to heal. Jesus uses this situation as an opportunity to teach His disciples about the importance of faith and prayer in their ministry.
Lesson:The incident that follows in Mark 9:14-29 highlights the disciples’ lack of faith and their need to rely on God’s power. Jesus rebukes their unbelief and emphasizes the importance of faith in overcoming challenges. He states in Mark 9:23 (KJV): “If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.” Jesus also emphasizes the power of prayer and fasting in strengthening one’s faith and spiritual growth.
