Mark 9:17

Posted on 18 May at 14:18
Listen to this article

“And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit”

Context:Mark 9:17 is part of a larger passage known as the Transfiguration account (Mark 9:2-29). Jesus had taken Peter, James, and John up to a mountain where He was transfigured before them. As they came down from the mountain, they encountered a large crowd and the other disciples, who were engaged in a dispute with the scribes.

Introduction to the verse:In this verse, a man from the multitude approaches Jesus and explains that he has brought his son to Him. The son is described as having a “dumb spirit,” meaning that he was unable to speak. The man seeks Jesus’ help and intervention for his son.

Observations:

  • The man’s recognition of Jesus’ authority: By addressing Jesus as “Master” or “Teacher,” the man acknowledges Jesus’ authority and seeks His assistance.
  • The son’s affliction: The boy is described as having a “dumb spirit,” implying that he was possessed by an evil spirit that rendered him unable to speak.
  • The father’s act of bringing his son to Jesus: The man takes the initiative to bring his son to Jesus, recognizing that Jesus has the power to heal and deliver.

Key lessons:

  • The need for personal encounter: The father’s decision to approach Jesus personally with his son highlights the importance of seeking a personal encounter with Jesus when facing challenges. It teaches us that we should bring our needs and concerns directly to Jesus, who is able to help and deliver us.
  • The recognition of Jesus’ authority: The man addressing Jesus as “Master” acknowledges Jesus’ authority over the situation. It reminds us that Jesus is the ultimate authority in our lives, and we should approach Him with reverence and trust in His power.
  • The power of faith: Although not explicitly mentioned in this verse, the broader context reveals that Jesus emphasizes the importance of faith. The man’s faith in Jesus’ ability to heal his son plays a crucial role in the subsequent events and the eventual deliverance of the boy.

Application:Seek Jesus in times of need:Just as the father in this passage approached Jesus with his son, we should seek Jesus in our times of need. He is always available and ready to hear our prayers and provide the help and guidance we require. Recognize Jesus’ authority:Acknowledge Jesus’ authority over your life and trust in His ability to bring healing and deliverance. Submitting to His lordship allows Him to work in and through us. Cultivate faith:Nurture and strengthen your faith in Jesus. Faith plays a crucial role in our relationship with Him and enables us to experience His power and provision.

Remember, this Bible study is just a starting point, and there are many more insights and applications that can be drawn from Mark 9:17 and its surrounding context. I encourage you to dive deeper into the passage and explore the rich truths and lessons it offers.
