Mark 9:33

Listen to this article

And he came to Capernaum; and being in the house, he asked them, What was it that yee disputed among your selues by the way? Mark 9:33 (KJV)

Context: In this verse we find Jesus and His disciples in Capernaum. Prior to arriving they had been traveling, and during the journey the disciples were engaged in a dispute among themselves. When they entered the house, Jesus asked them what they were arguing about.

Key Themes and Lessons:

Disciples’ Pride: This verse highlights the disciples’ lack of humility and unity. Their dispute reveals a human tendency toward pride and division. It serves as a reminder for believers to examine their attitudes and to strive for humility and harmony in their relationships with one another.

Humility and Servanthood: The question also shows Jesus’ humility and concern for His followers. Though He is their Teacher and Lord, He takes the time to inquire about their discussion, modeling a servant‑hearted approach that encourages us to serve one another with humility.

Unity and Harmony: The fact that the disciples were disputing raises the issue of discord and lack of unity. Jesus’ question brings the matter to the forefront, reminding us of the significance of unity within the body of Christ. Disputes can hinder the Church’s effectiveness; therefore believers must seek harmony and resolve conflicts in a spirit of love and humility.

Communication and Openness: By asking the question, Jesus encourages open communication. He wants to hear their thoughts and concerns, teaching us the value of honest dialogue and the importance of addressing conflicts directly rather than allowing misunderstandings to fester.

Jesus’ Omniscience: As fully God, Jesus already knew the content of the disciples’ dispute before He asked. This demonstrates His divine insight into the hearts and minds of people and reminds us that He is aware of our thoughts, intentions, and actions even when we do not express them openly.

Application: Reflecting on Mark 9:33, we should pursue humility, servanthood, and unity in our relationships, especially within the Church. We are called to communicate openly, address disagreements promptly, and trust that Jesus knows our hearts. By doing so, we honor Him and foster a community that reflects His love and wisdom.
