Mark 9:42

Listen to this article

“And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.”

In this verse, Jesus warns about causing offense or stumbling to "little ones" who believe in Him. The term "little ones" here is often understood as referring to both young children and also to those who are spiritually young or new in their faith. Jesus emphasizes the importance of treating them with care and not leading them astray.

This verse uses strong language to convey the gravity of causing harm to others. The imagery of having a millstone hung around one’s neck and being cast into the sea depicts a severe punishment. Jesus is emphasizing the severity of the consequences for those who lead others into sin or cause them to stumble in their faith.

This verse also highlights the responsibility that believers have toward one another. We are called to be mindful of how our words, actions, and influence can impact those around us, particularly those who are new or vulnerable in their faith. It is a reminder to be cautious and considerate in our interactions, seeking to build others up rather than leading them into sin or confusion.

The broader context of this passage in Mark 9:42-50 reveals that Jesus continues to address the seriousness of causing others to stumble. He goes on to say that if our hand, foot, or eye causes us to sin, it would be better to remove it rather than allowing it to lead us or others astray. This vivid language emphasizes the need for radical self-discipline and the avoidance of anything that would hinder our walk with God or negatively impact others.
