Matthew 1:10

“And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias.”

Context:Matthew 1:1 begins with the genealogy of Jesus Christ, tracing His lineage back to Abraham. This verse falls within that genealogy, specifically in the section that spans from King Hezekiah to King Josiah. Matthew includes this genealogy to establish Jesus’ rightful place as the descendant of David and the fulfillment of the messianic prophecies.

Ezekias (Hezekiah):Hezekiah, also known as Ezekias, was the son of King Ahaz and the 13th king of Judah. He reigned from around 715 BC to 686 BC. Hezekiah is known for his faithfulness to God and his efforts to reform the worship practices in Judah. He also experienced a miraculous deliverance from illness when God added 15 years to his life (2 Kings 18-20).

Manasses (Manasseh):Manasseh was the son of Hezekiah and the 14th king of Judah. He reigned from around 686 BC to 642 BC. Unlike his father, Manasseh was known for his wickedness. He led the people of Judah into idolatry, practising detestable things, and shedding innocent blood. However, in his later years, after being captured by the Assyrians, he repented and turned back to God (2 Chronicles 33:1-20).

Amon:Amon was the son of Manasseh and the 15th king of Judah. He reigned from around 642 BC to 640 BC. Amon followed in the wicked ways of his father before him and did not turn back to the Lord. His reign was short-lived as he was assassinated by his own servants due to his unpopularity among the people.

Josias (Josiah):Josiah, also known as Josias, was the son of Amon and the 16th king of Judah. He reigned from around 640 BC to 609 BC. Josiah is remembered as one of the most righteous and godly kings in the history of Judah. He initiated religious reforms, restored the worship of God, and rediscovered the Book of the Law (likely the Book of Deuteronomy) in the temple. Josiah led the nation in turning back to God and keeping His commandments.
