Matthew 1:3

“And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram.”

Context:Matthew 1:1-17 presents the genealogy of Jesus Christ, tracing His lineage back to Abraham. This genealogy is divided into three sections:from Abraham to David, from David to the Babylonian exile, and from the exile to Jesus. Matthew’s purpose is to establish Jesus’ royal and Messianic lineage.

Judas and Tamar:The verse mentions Judas (also spelled as Judah), who was one of the twelve sons of Jacob (Israel). Judas married a Canaanite woman named Shuah and had three sons: Er, Onan, and Shelah. Tamar was the widow of Er, Judas’ firstborn, and she played a significant role in this lineage. When Judas’ second son, Onan, refused to fulfil the duty of levirate marriage (marrying his brother’s widow to continue the family line), God struck him dead. Judas was hesitant to give Tamar to his third son, Shelah, fearing that he would also die. So, Tamar took matters into her own hands to secure her rightful place in the lineage (Genesis 38).

The Twins:Tamar disguised herself as a prostitute and seduced Judas, who unknowingly slept with her. She conceived and gave birth to twin boys, Phares (Perez) and Zara (Zerah). During the birth, Zara reached out his hand first, and a scarlet thread was tied around it as a marker. However, Phares ultimately emerged first, becoming the rightful heir and breaking the expected birth order. Phares is the ancestor of King David and, ultimately, Jesus Christ.

Spiritual Lessons:God’s Sovereignty:Despite the complicated circumstances and moral ambiguities, God’s plan of redemption and His choice of the Messianic lineage were not hindered. God can work through imperfect people and situations to fulfil His purposes. Redemption and Grace:Tamar, through her perseverance and resourcefulness, overcame her disadvantaged position and secured her place in the lineage of Christ. Her story reveals God’s grace and His willingness to include unlikely individuals in His redemptive plan. God’s Faithfulness:The scarlet thread tied around Zara’s hand, representing the firstborn right, serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness to fulfil His promises. The scarlet thread reappears in the Bible as a symbol of redemption (Joshua 2:18-21).

Application:Trust God’s Plan:Just as God’s plan unfolded through unexpected circumstances in Tamar’s life, we should trust God’s plan for our own lives, even when it doesn’t align with our expectations. Seek God’s Grace:Tamar’s story teaches us that God’s grace is available to all, regardless of our background or past mistakes. We can find forgiveness, redemption, and a place in God’s family through Jesus Christ. Embrace God’s Faithfulness:The scarlet thread reminds us of God’s faithfulness to fulfil His promises. We can hold onto His promises and trust that He will be faithful in every aspect of our lives. Remember to read the surrounding verses and consult additional commentaries and Bible study resources to gain a deeper understanding of Matthew 1:3 and its significance in the broader context of Scripture.
