Listen to this article

“And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse.”

Context:Matthew 1:5 is part of the genealogy of Jesus Christ as recorded in the first chapter of the Gospel of Matthew. This genealogy traces the lineage of Jesus from Abraham through King David to Joseph, the husband of Mary.

Salmon and Rahab:Matthew mentions that Salmon begat Boaz (Booz) through Rahab. Rahab was a Canaanite woman who lived in Jericho and was known for her faith in God. She helped the Israelite spies and eventually became part of the lineage of Jesus. This inclusion of Rahab in the genealogy emphasises God’s grace and willingness to accept Gentiles into His redemptive plan.

Boaz and Ruth:Matthew continues by stating that Boaz (Booz) begat Obed through Ruth. Ruth was a Moabite woman who became the great-grandmother of King David. Her story is recorded in the Book of Ruth, where she demonstrated remarkable loyalty and faithfulness to her mother-in-law, Naomi. Ruth’s inclusion in the genealogy highlights God’s faithfulness and His ability to bring redemption through unexpected individuals.

Obed and Jesse:Lastly, Matthew mentions that Obed begat Jesse. Obed was the son of Boaz and Ruth, and Jesse was the father of King David. This lineage from Obed to Jesse emphasises the fulfilment of the messianic prophecies, as it was from the line of David that the Messiah, Jesus Christ, would come.

Key themes in Matthew 1:5:

  • a. God’s grace and inclusion: The inclusion of Rahab and Ruth in Jesus’ genealogy underscores God’s willingness to extend His grace to all, regardless of their background or nationality. It highlights the universal nature of God’s redemptive plan.
  • b. Faithfulness and loyalty: The stories of Rahab and Ruth demonstrate their faithfulness to God and others. Their examples serve as reminders of the importance of trust and loyalty in our relationships and our walk with God.
  • c. Fulfilment of prophecies: The mention of Jesse and the subsequent lineage leading to Jesus demonstrates the fulfilment of Old Testament prophecies that the Messiah would come from the house of David. This genealogy affirms Jesus’ rightful claim as the promised Messiah.

Overall, Matthew 1:5 provides a glimpse into the genealogy of Jesus Christ and emphasises important themes such as God’s grace, faithfulness, and the fulfilment of messianic prophecies. It reminds us of God’s redemptive plan for all people and His ability to work through unexpected individuals to accomplish His purposes.
